Mekong: When to Go

Mekong Countryside

Although Mekong River cruises are offered year-round, generally the best time to take one is during the cooler months of November through March.

Along the Mekong River, temperatures are steamy and hot throughout the year with periods of rainy and dry weather. Around May, the southwestern monsoon brings rain and high humidity, which lasts until October. During the wet season, foliage is lush, moats are full of water and crowds are relatively thin. The very flat Mekong Delta area in Vietnam is also prone to flooding during the wet months. The tourist crowds are more prevalent from November to March when humidity levels are rather low and there is little rainfall.

As a way to experience South East Asia culture, some visitors like to coordinate their trip with one of the annual festivals, such as Bon Om Tuk, Khmer New Year or Tet (Vietnamese New Year).
